stock.xchng Free Stock Photos

stock.xchng was launched in February 2001 as an alternative for expensive stock photography. The idea was to create a site where creative people could exchange their photos for inspiration or work. The site has evolved and has around 400,000 photos online. 

You can browse their huge image gallery, or share your own photos with others. Need a wallpaper for your desktop or illustration for your blog? Need a pic for your commercial website design? Looking for inspiration? Have a look around.

You can also share your photos with fellow designers. SXC is a friendly community of photography addicts who generously offer their works to those who need them free of charge. Glossary of Internet terms

Content management system

A content management system, or CMS, is a web application designed to make it easy for non-technical users to add, edit and manage a website.

CSS

CSS stands for "Cascading Style Sheet." Cascading style sheets are used to format the layout of Web pages.

Domain name

This is the name that identifies a Web site.

Dynamic website

A dynamic website contains Web pages that are generated dynamically.

Ecommerce

E-commerce (electronic-commerce) refers to business over the Internet.

Flash

Flash is a multimedia technology used for creating animations and interactive websites.

FTP

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol." It is a common method of transferring files to and from the Internet.

GIF

GIF is a compressed image file format.

HTML

HTML stands for "Hyper-Text Markup Language." This is the language that Web pages are written in.

Icon

An icon is a picture used to represent an object.

ISP

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider.

JPEG

JPEG is a compressed image file format, best for compressing photographic images.

Keywords

Keywords are words or phrases that describe content. They are used 1) as search terms for search engines, and 2) as words that identify the content of the website.

Search Engine

Google, Excite, Lycos, AltaVista, Infoseek, and Yahoo are all search engines. They index millions of sites on the Web.

SEO

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization."  It refers to the ability to achieve a high search engine ranking.

Server

A server is a computer that has information or services that are available for other computers to access.

Site map

A site map is an overview of the pages within a website.

Web

The Web is one part of the Internet.  The Web consists of web pages that are hosted on  server computers. If you are connected to the Internet, you can view web pages with a web browser program.

Web Browser

A web browser is a program  that you use to view web pages, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Web Page

A web page is a document that can contain formatted text, graphics, animation, sound, links to other pages, and much more. Some web pages are generated dynamically (such as the results of a search). Every web page on the Internet has a unique address which usually starts with www.
