Welcome to the February 2010 issue of our newsletter
Walker Websites Ltd is a web design company, based in London. We offer free, friendly advice on topics such as: initial setup and cost, domain name and hosting, designing professional or personal websites, search engine optimisation, and maintaining your website.

You choose whether to maintain and update your own website or whether to pay a small charge for this to be done for you. You can do as much or as little of the work as you want – it’s up to you. We would be happy to discuss any requirements with you - with no obligation.

Sitemaps

Sitemaps are a way to tell search engines such as Google about pages on your site that they might not otherwise discover. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

Sitemaps are particularly helpful if:

Your site has dynamic content.
Your site has pages that aren't easily discovered by Googlebot during the crawl process—for example, pages featuring rich AJAX or images.
Your site is new and has few links to it. (Googlebot crawls the web by following links from one page to another, so if your site isn't well linked, it may be hard for us to discover it.)
Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all.

Tthe data in your Sitemap is used to learn about your site's structure, which will allow the crawler to do a better job crawling your site in the future. In most cases, you will benefit from Sitemap submission, and in no case will you be penalized for it.

You should update your sitemap whenever you add or delete pages, but not every time that you update your website.

Just replace "mywebsite.co.uk" with your own domain name and "myicon.ico" with the name of the icon file. I have added an icon to this newsletter - you can view the code source if you want to see exactly how to add the HTML code.
